Why Zenitmap
Most star maps are templates. Ours is computed.
A lot of “personalised” star maps are a stock sky with your names typed underneath. We built a renderer instead. It takes the coordinates of the place you enter, converts your local time — daylight saving included — to the moment the sky was actually in that position, precesses the Hipparcos star catalogue to that date and draws what you would have seen looking straight up. The zenith sits in the middle of the print. That is where the name comes from.
City maps are drawn from OpenStreetMap data at a scale that keeps the streets legible at 50 × 70. Moon phases are calculated, not picked from a set of twelve pictures. We check the star maps against Stellarium for known dates and places and keep the log.
We are two people in Bratislava who run an online shop for a living. The prints are produced by Gelato and Printful in their EU facilities — Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Latvia — which is why a poster ordered on Monday evening in Munich is usually on the wall by Friday.
How we compute your skyHipparcos catalogue
117,955 stars measured by ESA’s Hipparcos mission, precessed from J2000 to your date. Public-domain data, no licence stickers on your print.
Your time, your time zone
Local time is converted with the IANA time-zone database, so a 21:40 wedding in Prague in July is placed correctly even though the clocks were on summer time.
OpenStreetMap, credited
City maps carry “© OpenStreetMap contributors” in the footer, as the licence requires. We render from our own extracts, not from someone’s tile server.
Christmas 2026
Order prints by 12 December. After that, the PDF arrives in seconds.
Posters and canvases for Germany, Austria, Benelux and Central Europe need to be ordered by 12 December (framed prints by 9 December) to arrive before Christmas Eve. Miss the date? The instant PDF is delivered the moment you pay, and the “PDF now, print in January” bundle lets you give the print on the day and hang it in the new year.
